Medical check-ups and health screening: how it works

Prof. Dr. Bamberger, Hamburg, Germany shares his professional expertise about medical check-ups to let you know more about health screening. Continue reading to find out what is health screening, how long does it take and who is it for?
The director of the Medical Prevention Centre Hamburg, Germany (MPCH), Prof. Dr. C. M. Bamberger explains how a health check at his institute works, who it is for and what the benefits are. He is a leading expert in the field of aging-related diseases and prevention and holds the only professorship for endocrinology and aging metabolism in Germany.

In Hamburg, you founded a special centre for preventive medicine and health checks. What is the idea behind it?

The idea is that people who care for their health but do not have a lot of time to spend on this issue, finally have a place where they can undergo a premium “head to toe” check up within half a day in a comfortable and service-oriented environment.

Who are you aiming to help - old people, young people, people feeling healthy, people feeling sick?

All of them, since we are not only a preventive but also a diagnostic centre. Our typical “patient”, however, is a high performer between 30 and 75 who wants to stay this way for many years to come.

Which health check and prevention programmes do you offer?

Most people book our Business Check, which includes a complete laboratory work up that is comprised of hormone level checks, radiation-free whole body MRI including a virtual colonoscopy, MRI-based Alzheimer-risk check, ultrasound of arterial vessels, thyroid gland, heart and abdominal organs, bone densitometry, body composition analysis, eye check, skin check, ECG and lung function test.

The First Class Check includes all this, plus extensive genetic testing and more specialised checks, such as orthopaedics or ENT.

How does health screening work?

In a very convenient and comfortable way. Every patient is provided with his or her personal room equipped with flat screen TV and high speed internet. Privacy is, thus, guaranteed, throughout the check up.

For the medical examinations, the patient is brought to the respective site within our Center, e.g. the MRI, and brought back to his room afterwards. During short breaks, coffee and snacks are served.

In the end, all results are presented to the patient in his personal room. The MRI images are displayed on the flat screen, so the patient can undertake a journey through their own body.

Every patient is provided with his or her personal room equipped with flat screen TV and high speed internet. Privacy is, thus, guaranteed, throughout the check up.

How much do check-ups at your centre cost?

The cost of the Business Check is EUR 5.000,00. Without MRI, it costs EUR 2.500,00 (“Economy Check”).

What is unique about your approach to health screening?

The combination of university level medicine, service, comfort and time efficiency (5 h for a complete check up). I would also like to add that you will probably not find a more comprehensive check up anywhere in Germany.
