The Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree

Surely the most majestic sight in London come December, the giant tree in Trafalgar Square is given every year as a gift from Norway to the people of Britain in thanks for their support during the Second World War.

The first tree was presented to the city in 1947 and has become a dazzling highlight of the city decorations.

The tree is selected in Norway in November and is cut down in a ceremony attended by the British ambassador to Norway and the Mayors of Oslo and Westminster.

Usually measuring over 20 metres tall, and adorned with over 500 twinkling white lights, the awe-inspiring Norway Spruce is a gathering point for carol singers bringing Christmas cheer to all around.

The tree is first lit up at the beginning of December and carol singing groups entertain every evening to the crowds, collecting funds for charitable causes with the lights glimmering in the background.
